Neighbourhood Festival 8/10/16

In it's first year, brand new indie Festival sold-out and stormed the streets of Manchester. You can subscribe for early bird tickets for NBHD 2017 here.

Despite there being over 100 acts, I only managed to see a handful, the queues for the venues were horrendous and they sold way too many tickets, Liam Fray (who I wanted to see most) was full up 2 hours before doors even opened - at which point I was enjoying Blossoms whom I'd queued for for well over an hour. If you go next year, get in early for the acts you wanna see.

You can see the full line up from this years festival here.

Star Trek; The 50th Anniversary

Today, 8th September 2016, is exactly 50 years since the first episode of The Original Series was aired on TV, and it’s a big day for nerds and Trekkies alike.

There’s a new series coming out, Star Trek: Discovery, in early 2017 – and it has been promised that it’ll live up to the previous televised series’ and astonish us.

Unfortunately, Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin aren’t here to celebrate the day with us, but 6 Seasons, 13 films and many crews later, here we are 50 years since it all began. Star Trek is undoubtedly the most successful long-running franchises of all time.

John Rylands Library

Vintage Vases and Bottles in the Shop
aka the most beautiful building in Manchester. Like seriously. It's basically a museum on the first few floors, with a cute lil shop and cafe on the ground. The highest floor (that you're allowed on) is the reading room, you can sit, bring a laptop, study there, and theres huge books in display cases. It'd also be the perfect place to base GCSE Art and Photography projects on.

On the first floor, there's rooms just filled with books, dating hundreds of years back, theres even fragments of papyrus from around 500AD.

The library actually reminded me a lot of Hogwarts, all the books, dimly lit corridors, stained glass windows and high ceilings with patterns all throughout the bricks.

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

The play 'Harry Potter And The Cursed Chid' first premiered on stage in July of this year, and JK Rowling urged people to 'keep the secret', for the books release (tomorrow) Sunday 31st July 2016, and as not to spoil the play for others. Despite this, there are a lot of spoilers online (all of which i have avoided), and a lot of new theories (one of them being that Ron is  Time-traveling Dumbledore, and that Crookshanks is James and Lily's old cat).

Inequality And Separation In New Look

My friend Eva, alerted me to a very real situation, I was already aware of the social conformity of 'perfection' but I never knew that people were being cast out on this level!

There are many organisations that fight for equality, but I think one of the most important are those who are against social alienation. In New Look, they have a whole different section for people considered as 'Plus Size'. For a start how much of a confidence boost is it knowing that clothing brands refer to you as 'plus size'? Those considered 'plus size; have to go to a whole section of the store, the clothes are the same, just larger sizes, why can't they just be kept in the same place as those of what New Look seem to view as a 'Normal Size'. Having a whole different section, makes people feel like they are different, and shouldn't be shopping with other people, in the same section. This isn't right, they're being discriminative towards those who need larger clothing.

Cats, Bats, Woodland Walks, And Almost Falling To My Death (And A Lot Of Singing Hamilton)

The Cats

I've always been a dog person, but after meeting this beauty, I am definitely also a cat person. Kat, had two cats in her garden, (one ran off - I'm pretty sure it was scared of us), and we called them Salty Jr and Pepper. Salty was a lovely snow-coloured cat, and looked adorable among a cluster of forget-me-not flowers. We just kept on putting flowers in Kat's hair (it actually looked really lovely).

*Prepare for a spam of cute cat pictures*

An Interview With Corner Pilots

Ever heard of a band called Corner Pilots? Well if you haven't it's your loss. They're a five piece band from Surrey who play insane rock music and are definitely worth getting to know. You can have a listen to some of their tracks on SoundCloud HERE.

Q. Why did you choose the name Corner Pilots and who came up with it?

A. Our frontman Dan came up with it. We got to a point where we had to be called something when performing and that's the first one he came up with that we liked the sound of

Maise Williams Goes Undercover And Pranks 'Game Of Thrones' Fans

Maisie Williams shows her humorous side in a prank where her alter ego 'Lorraine' (who has never watched, let alone portrayed a main character in show) gives away Game Of Thrones prizes, but she doesn't manage to fool anybody. Maisie gave away free merchandise at 'Aero Hobbies' shop in Santa Monica, in return for customers performing GOT related stints, surprising, and confusing, a plethora of unsuspecting fans along the way.

Freaks and Geeks

The cast (From top to bottom, left to right: Ken, Neal,
Daniel, Bill, Sam, Lindsay, Kim, Nick)
Freaks And Geeks follows two friendship groups in high school, 'The Freaks' and 'The Geeks'. The main story is about one girls transition from mathlete to a Rock N Roll rebel.

The Freaks:                                The Geeks:

Daniel (James Franco)                 Sam (John F. Daley)
Lindsay (Linda Cardenilli)          Bill (Martin Star)
Ken (Seth Rogen)                        Neal (Samm Levine)
Nick (Jason Segel)
Kim (Busy Phillips)

The shows theme song is 'Joan Jett And The Blackhearts - Bad Reputation', sadly this show only has one season (I really wish they'd made a second) and the main theme of the show is being who you are. P.S. There is a lot of drugs and alcohol throughout the show. My favourite character is definitely Nick, he's a very chilled out person and has an extreme passion for Rock, especially when it comes to John Bonham.

David Bowie 1947-2016

"I'm an instant star. Just add water and stir."

As long as I can remember, David Bowie has always been my hero, he was an exceptionally talented musician, actor and painter. To hear of his death is an absolute shock (I'll be dressed in black for at least a week). David Bowie, aged 69, peacefully passed away in his home yesterday surrounded by his family, at the hands of cancer. He will forever be remembered for everything he has blessed humanity with, he was a gift. The whole world will be mourning the loss of this talented star.

The Hunger Games is the Tri-Wizard tournament

I was watching Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (the fourth installment of the Harry Potter series) the other night when I had a realisation: The Hunger Games bears a striking resemblance to the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Now, if you haven't read/watched either of these, and don't think highly of major plot spoilers, I advise that you don't read on!
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire was released (July 8 2000)  a little over 8 years prior to The Hunger Games (novels). There are various similarities between both of the competitions in these stories, and I have compiled a list of the more obvious and subtle ones.
  • Both games are primarily for entertainment , this shows that both the Wizarding and future American Society do not have a problem with putting the lives of underaged children in danger for the purpose of entertainment. The Tri-Wizard tournament is supposed to be a competition to bring together different schools and forge new friendships, surely there are easier ways to do this (student exchange programme anyone?).
  • The names for those who will be competing are drawn out of a bowl shaped object/cup with the names written on a small piece of paper, granted the 'fish bowl' in The Hunger Games doesn't look like it's constantly breathing blue fire.
